  • Florida DOR finds corporation's machinery purchases ineligible for business expansion exemption, TaxAnalysts.com (October 23, 2014)**
    The Florida Department of Revenue ruled that a corporation's purchases of self-service key-cutting machines do not qualify for a sales and use tax exemption for new or expanding businesses because the corporation is not considered a new business opening a new facility or plant and the corporation is not manufacturing or producing the keys.

  • Tax Foundation releases 2015 state business tax climate index, TaxAnalysts.com (October 28, 2014)**
    The Tax Foundation has released its state business tax climate index for 2015; notable changes to this year's rankings include North Carolina's jump from 44th to 16th due to comprehensive reforms, Kansas's fall from 19th to 22nd despite income tax cuts, and improved ratings for New York, Nebraska, and North Dakota due to improvements in their income tax systems.

    The South Carolina Department of Revenue, in a private letter ruling, explained that an abandoned building owner is eligible for a revitalization tax credit under the state's revitalization act for planned redevelopment and may claim the demolition and construction costs of building the new structure as rehabilitation expenses.
